WCA Health Tech Conference to Showcase Growth of Biotech, Medtech, and More!
Score another home run for Westchester! Acorda Therapeutics is embarking upon a $6 million expansion on the Ardsley Park life science campus in Westchester County, which will culminate in the creation of 90 new jobs, in addition to the company’s current workforce of 282 people, according to today’s Westchester Business Journal.
“This is fantastic news, and means a great deal to Westchester’s burgeoning biotech cluster,” said Marissa Brett, executive director of the BLUEPRINT for Westchester, the WCAs aggressive economic development initiative. “Our upcoming conference, ‘Health Tech ’14: Fueling Innovation in Westchester,’ will showcase the innovation of companies like Acorda, and cement the county’s position in a thriving northeast health tech economic hub.”
Acorda Therapeutics has experienced rapid growth—particularly in the past two years of its 16 years in Westchester, according to a recent Westchester County Business Journal report. After moving in 2012 from Hawthorne to Biomed Realty Trust’s Ardsley campus, the company pledged to create 190 jobs over 5 years. Now, the company, which develops medications for people with nervous system disorders, has already grown out of this space and is looking to lease an additional 25,000 square feet of offices and labs. In a press release to investors, Dr. Ron Cohen, founding president and CEO, said the company had growing revenues and close to $370 million in cash, according to the story.
“Acorda is part of a $10+billion—and growing—healthcare industry in Westchester,” said Brett. “Along with tech giants like IBM and Regeneron, we have an ever-increasing roster of biotech companies, plus a multi-million dollar biotech incubator coming online at New York Medical College. Anyone starting a company in health tech needs to look at Westchester County.”
