Fighting the Flu Season at the Office Some Easy Steps Can Save a Lot of Misery
By Erik A. Larsen, M.D., Associate Director, Emergency Department, White Plains Hospital Center

American businesses typically lose billions of dollars in employee sick days and lost productivity because of the flu. This year is especially problematic because we are dealing with both the regular seasonal flu and the H1N1 influenza (the new strain otherwise known as "swine flu").

Each year in the U.S., seasonal influenza results in an estimated 36,000 deaths and more than 200,000 hospitalizations from flu-related causes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is expecting there will be more deaths and illnesses from the H1N1 outbreak which affects primarily young people under the age of 25, children under the age of 5, pregnant women, individuals with chronic pulmonary, cardiovascular, renal, hepatic, hematological, neurologic, neuromuscular or metabolic disorders, and residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities.

Business owners can take some easy steps to help keep both their employees and bottom lines healthy and to do their part to help prevent the spread of the flu infection in our community and beyond.

It's important to impress individuals to get vaccinated for both flu strains, which is highly recommended by public health care officials to prevent becoming infected. Because the H1N1 is a new virus, most people will not have immunity to it.

It's also recommended to promote proper hand hygiene in the work place. Understanding how the viruses spread underscores why keeping one's hands clean is a key prevention step. The disease is carried though respiratory droplets-coughing and sneezing-and then transmitting those droplets by touching the mucus membranes-mouth, nose and eyes. The hands are the most obvious means by which people unknowingly spread infection both at the work place and at home-by shaking other people's hands, handling food, opening doors in public places or turning the pages of a magazine in the waiting room of an office.

Washing the hands often with soap and warm water for 15 to 20 seconds, especially after coughing and sneezing, is highly recommended. At White Plains Hospital Center, we also advocate and practice an extra step to make hand hygiene even more effective- the use of alcohol-based sanitizers. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has long recommended hand sanitizers as an effective way to reduce the number of potential infection-spreading microorganisms on the skin. Two years ago, White Plains Hospital Center adopted the policy by distributing hand wipes on every patient meal tray- the first community hospital in Westchester do so- and mounted an aggressive campaign to encourage all visitors and hospital personnel to make use of hand sanitizers.

Hand sanitizers are not expensive and can be purchased in neighborhood pharmacies. Business owners might want to consider providing hand sanitizers in the rest rooms of their facilities for use by the employees.

In the event an employee becomes sick with the flu, it's important he or she stay home until 24 hours after the fever is gone without the use of fever-reducing medicines. However, an infected individual often does not feel sick for 24 hours after the onset of the disease. That means the person was potentially infectious to other people during that time. That's why it's so important to maintain good hygiene procedures at the work place. Tissues and other disposable items used by the sick person should be thrown away and the surfaces of their desk and computer wiped with a disinfectant. Eating utensils and dishes need to be cleaned separately and washed thoroughly in a dishwasher with soap and water if possible.

Communicating accurate information about this serious public health issue will help in minimizing the number of people who will be infected with the flu. White Plains Hospital Center makes available on its website,
www.wphopsital.org , timely information and tips about how to prepare and cope with the flu. The staff of the Hospital wishes everyone safe passage through this flu season and good health always.
